About Kate Kate Woodstrup grew up in northern Chicago and received her BA in Studio Art and teaching licenses in Visual Art and English as a Second Language from St. Olaf College in 2009. Soon after she began teaching art education at Bridgewater Elementary in Northfield. Her work has been exhibited at the Northfield Arts Guild, Northfield City Hall, the Northfield Chamber of Commerce, and she has done commission work for Bachman’s and private clients. She enjoys working in pottery, drawing, and watercolors because it is necessary to allow nature do its thing and the outcomes can be wonderfully unpredictable.

Artist Statement: Nature’s Archetype
In Nature’s Archetype, I pursue natural and artificial patterns found in plants, animals and insects to reveal their inner strength - unseen to surface observation. Subjects including Ginkgo trees, wasps, barn owls, and sea urchins each carry distinct patterns and markings - the result of evolution and success. In contrast to the beauty of their exteriors, each of these subjects deploy internal or external systems of defense that base themselves on the strength of their core patterns. Artist Statement: Roots and Wings There are places I'll remember All my life, though some have changed Some forever, not for better Some have gone and some remain All these places have their moments With lovers and friends I still can recall Some are dead and some are living In my life, I've loved them all - John Lennon / Paul McCartney, "In My Life" 1965 The Roots and Wings watercolor series grew from a collection of memorable places and loved ones. Each one is unique in the textures, colors, and landscape; carefully curated the way a bird selects objects for a nest. This series began as a way to record the zeitgeist of my youth with my grandparents and parents, but transitioned to a way to chronicle the pieces I chose to assemble my own nest. |
